Relocating From Midwest to NY with Two High School Daughters?

Kelly asked:

I am considering a short-term relocation (9-12 mos) to NY. The project I am considering is located in Bay Ridge/Brooklyn. Is it feasible to put my Daughters (remember, they are midwestern girls/suburb raised!) in Public School? I have been doing some research and the school system is much different than what we’re used to, such as the technical high schools, magnet schools, etc. Since it’s short term it’s not reasonable to put them in Private School (?)- Is there such a thing as plain ol’ public school? Safety is my #1 concern. Even if the school isn’t the greatest academically, I would like my girls to experience city life, which I think is a great education in itself. And, we will eventually come back to Missouri. Any suggestions?

Some of the public high schools in NYC are really great. Some are absolutely abysmal. And it’s often the case that kids in NYC don’t go to high school in their neighborhood – so your kids may not go to school in Brooklyn. Or even near it.

It’s generally the case that the schools that require an exam or a lottery to get into tend to be the better schools. But that’s a generalization.

To help you in your search, I’ll give you some links that may help. All deal directly with your question:

This one is about a book on this subject:

Myself, I chose to move out of NYC, and the quality of the schools in the suburbs v. those in the city was a major consideration. Although NYC elementary schools tend to be fine or at least okay, the high schools… The great ones are really great. The rest absolutely are not. Do your research carefully.
