Tom asked:

I’ll be living in BK for a few months. Where do you think is safe and where do you consider it to be rough? Just make lists, e.g.,

Safe:
Park Slope
Bay Ridge

Thanks. Let’s see which Brooklynite here has the best knowledge!

Here we go, in no particular order:

Safe:
Park Slope
Bay RIdge
Brooklyn Heights
All of the BoCaCa neighborhoods (Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens)
Most of Fort Greene
Most of WIlliamsburg
DUMBO
Midwood
Dyker Heights
Most of Sunset Park
Windsor Terrace
Kensington
Greenpoint
Brighton Beach
Manhattan Beach
Bensonhurst
Borough Park
Clinton Hill
(There are others, but I can’t think of them all off the top of my head.)

Dangerous:
East New York
Parts of Bushwick
Parts of Bedford Stuyvesant
Parts of East Flatbush

Trendy (depends on what you mean by trendy of course):
Park Slope
Williamsburg
DUMBO

Brooklynite knowledge: it’s simply not true that neighborhoods here or probably anywhere else can be broadly categorized that way. You’ve already categorized Park Slope as safe, but a Google search for “park slope crime” brings up this near the top:

The first Google result for “bay ridge crime” starts out with “The crime rate in Bay Ridge is actually higher than in Flatbush.”

Trendy? What does that even mean? In demand for college kids? Considered ideal for young families? Having a lot of nightclubs? Having yoga schools?

No doubt there’ll be a few lists posted here reflecting the prejudices and ill-formed opinions of a few writers, but in the end none of it’s going to be at all meaningful because you’re asking a question that can not be answered factually.
