It’s not dangerous at all, a little run down though, but worth seeing at least once. Warm weather months is the best time to go.
As long as you don’t go in the water.
To enjoy it go when it’s warm to get the most out of it, hence it is a broadwalk/ beachlike
It’s not a pretty area, but it’s not dangerous at all. If you want to go, just to say you’ve been there, then check it out. Be warned though that you’re going to be disappointed. It’s not as glamorous as people think it is–hence one of the reasons it’s being torn down and rebuilt from scratch.
Coney Island (”CI”) is undergoing major rehab. right now and is considered “up and coming”. The Astroland theme park has been closed, so with the exception of the Cyclone, there aren’t many rides, just in case you’re looking for that.
If you do get to visit, the place isn’t “dangerous” (anymore anyway) and offers other activities for everyone to enjoy. You can sample the Original Nathan’s hotdog – not to be missed at any time of the year. During summer, the area hosts free concerts, the NY Cyclones (Mets farm team) at Key Span Park, they have a very active boardwalk and beach area and a pretty great acquarium (year-round). If you’re hungry and don’t fancy hotdogs, a great restaurant to check out is Garguilo’s – a city favorite. Parking can be a hassle, but the surrounding area is really picking up. In a few years, the place will be transformed and is predicted to be “The Place to live and have fun” once again. Enjoy!
the area around the boardwalk and the amusement area is fine during the daytime. the surrounding area is not as good and not very safe at night.
not dangerous
it’s still a little rundown, but not dangerous. if you take the subway and go to Stillwell Avenue, the last stop, you end up at a newly renovated station. the neighborhood is slowly being fixed up, and there is a new minor-league baseball stadium there. the New York Aquarium is also a long time resident there. you can go any time of year, but summer will be better and well touristed if you like to go to the beach.
i would suggest that you start on the boardwalk at the Coney Island end, and walk east toward Brighton Beach, which is now a Russian-speaking neighborhood where you can have a nice lunch or dinner on Brighton Beach Avenue under the elevated trains.
(PS-i agree with going to Nathan’s Famous. it’s a must. have some hot dogs and fries there for lunch and Russian/Central Asian food for dinner. you can’t go wrong!)
Coney Island is safe if you stay to the broadwalk and the areas directly around it. Also, go to Gargiulo’s for a nice Italian dinner (take a cab there).
However, don’t go exploring into the projects. You will be a deer in the headlights.
Summer is an ideal time to check out Coney Island, as the beaches and amusements are open.
However, there are things to see and do year round, such as checking out Nathans Hot Dogs, a July 4th tradition, as they host the annual Hot Dog Eating Contest, which is broadcast on television.
As stated, Astroland is being torn down, but the Landmarked Tornado wooden coaster will remain (hooray!) It’s one of the oldest remaining wooden coasters, and a real thrill to ride.
The entire area has been recently renovated to attract tourists, especially since the Keyspan Stadium was built. There’s also an old fashioned sideshow on one of the side-streets, which was featured on the Travel Channel, it’s really unique.
Gargulios is really worth a trip, and is walking distance from the boardwalk. If they’re still there, there’s also Carolina restaurant, another great Italian eatery.
In the summer, there’s a huge police presence, so crime wouldn’t be an issue.
Just stay in the amusement and ballpark area, where the police are, and you’ll be fine.
It is okay during the day, but not as safe at night. Just be careful.
Nothing is that dangerous. There are alot of russians at the boardwalk. Most of them are old so they are not a threat.
Coney Island is a pretty rough part of Brooklyn. It’s not impossible to visit though, I wouldn’t go there after dark so I would say during the day you should be fine.
