Is Coney Island a Good Place to Visit?
Lynda asked:
What is out at Coney Island? What could we do there? Is it worth spending a day and is it true that it’s in a unsafe neighborhood.

must be a bit rough by now ,go with a bunch of friends
the whole world has become unsafe
any where
its the middle of winter there now.only the the hot dog stand and maybe the freak show is the only thing to see. its a summer place
The summer time is the only time to go there and it is alright. not the best place to go. Its famous for the Nathons hot dog contest, i wouldnt recommened swimming in the water, but others might disagree. There are always police on the premices though. there is a boardwalk you can walk and enjoy different stores and eats, some side shows, the beach and the arcade, rides that are alitle expensive. I would wait alittle they are going to be doing so much more in the near future to make it a better place!
Most of Coney Island is closed for the winter. Nathan’s Famous Hotdogs is open year round, but there won’t be much else to see there. The area is run down and seedy, but Surf Avenue and the Boardwalk are very well patroled, and that is the area that has the arcades, rides, shows and food. When the weather is warmer, there is a minor league baseball park, Keystone Park – the team is The Cyclones and there are a few restaurants that have opened near the stadium. The New York aquarium on West 8th Street is definitely worth seeing; in addition to fish, there are seals, walruses, sea otters and penguins.
One good thing about Coney Island is that Stillwell Avenue is a terminal station; it’s a block away from Nathan’s. The Q, D, F and N trains start out there so it’s very easy to go somewhere else in Brooklyn. You can take the Q train to Sheepshead Bay, the F train to Park Slope or Carroll Gardens, or the B train to Bensonhurst, Boro Park or Sunset Park. You can take the B64 bus to Bay Ridge or the B68 to Brighton Beach. So, if you get bored in Coney Island, it’s very easy to go somewhere else. And, of course, all those trains go to Manhattan.
