Williamsburg is nice, a vibrant artistic neighborhood. Flatbush is nice around Flatbush and Atlantic. Brooklyn Heights is the jewel of Brooklyn. Other nice neighborhoods: Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Gravesend, Manhattan Beach, Ocean Parkway, Bensonhurst, etc.

All of the above are pretty pricey – almost as much as Manhattan. (BTW, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens are so close they are sometimes referred to collectively as BoCoCa.)

For some nice, safe, cheaper neighborhoods (not too far from Manhattan):

Kensington
Windsor Terrace

For some safe neighborhoods that are really outer borough (far from Manhattan):

Bay Ridge
Dyker Heights

I’ve lived on the south side of Williamsburg for about 12 years (the Lorimer stop on the L train). It was cheap and not very safe when I moved in. Lots of drug activity. My neighborhood is predominantly Dominican and Puerto Rican. If you cross Broadway (a few blocks from my apartment) it’s all Satmar Jews. Over the years tons of college kids and yuppies have moved in making the neighborhood a bit more mixed. They have been building a lot of luxury condo buildings in the area. The cheaper ones seem to go for around $250,000 to $300,000 at times.
The neighborhood is a lot safer now but much more expensive and I don’t even live in the ‘hip’ part of Williamsburg (the north side). I have a 2 bedroom apt in a rent stabilized building. Apartments like mine in my building are now going for $1400-1600. You can expect to pay even more if you look for a place closer to the Bedford subway stop (north side)

Flatbush has some beautiful areas around the park. My ex grew up there. There are many mansions and nice old Victorian homes. BUT, you can turn a corner and it’s the ghetto. My ex’s father was jumped by a group of teenage girls getting off the train at the Cortelyou Rd. stop in the early evening. He was beaten pretty bad. I know the house that my ex’s parents live in is technically worth about $1.2 million but who knows how much they could sell it for in this market. It’s one of the smaller Victorian homes in the neighborhood.

I don’t know all that much about Crown Heights. It’s predominantly black with a large Lubavitch Jewish population. I’ve only been in the neighborhood a couple times and I was NOT in a safe area. My friend lived there and his rent was very cheap but I did not feel comfortable walking around at night.

Greenpoint is a nice neighborhood. Used to be mostly Polish, now it’s mixed but still heavy on the Poles. It was at one point the place where people moved who could not afford Williamsburg but I think the rents are getting pretty steep there as well.

There is always Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope. Great for families but extremely expensive now.

Look at the ads on Craigslist to get a sense of average apartment prices. There are many nice/safe areas of Brooklyn, but everyone has a different personal definition of “nice” and “safe.”
Williamsburg — previously a working-class Jewish neighborhood, recently a favorite among hipster twenty-somethings, lots of new apartment/condo buildings have recently gone up along the water.
Crown Heights — very nice along Eastern Parkway, and on the western edge of the neighborhood (where it borders Prospect Heights); more sketchy when you you get farther north and east. There have previously been some racial tensions between black and Jewish people in Crown Heights, as you’re seeing in the comments here.
Flatbush — huge area, some parts nicer than others, be careful of how long your commute would be (some parts of Flatbush are a long trip to Manhattan).
If you really want to focus on an area that’s pretty, quiet, and safe, you might consider Bay Ridge, although that’s also further to the south and thus a longer trip from Manhattan.

i mean, idk about youse but whenever i hear flatbush, crown heights, and or williamsburg , my mind thinks usafe. maybe times have changed. my friend lives in park slope, and some areas are nice, but others are very… ghetto. i live in dyker heights and i would have to say i believe its the safest neighborhood in brooklyn. nearby areas like bay ridge and bensonhurst are also nice. most of these places consist of italian people like myself. under the L in bensonhurst you can find alot of chinese people though. bayridge is pretty safe to walk around during night if your on 3rd avenue and same with 13th avenue in dyker both with places to eat. bensonhurst has alot of great food along 18th avenue but watch out for the 18th avenue feast, alot of fights break out. i also have to say crime isnt so bad here, somethings only happened to me once but thats because the people who did it had something out for me. the 68th preasing that covers these 3 areas are quick and great.
