How to Walk Across America?

Hello all. I don’t have many choices left. Since my mother died my life has been going in a constant downward spiral. Now my landlord wants me out in six months or pay $1500 rent. I have no intention of paying that much for this awful place. If they let me stay till the warmth of may or June I can sleep in the local park, the homeless shelters in my area brooklyn ny all have 3 yr waiting lists. I have money but no one will rent to me, I have no job. So I thought to myself what if I walked across America? Walk by day and at night sleep in a motel? The only problem is i don’t quite know how to do this. I don’t know what the best routes to take from bushwick Brooklyn out of the city into new jersey and west verginia and the carolinas and Georgia and Florida. New Orleans Oaklahoma Texas and so fourth. Is there anyone who has done this, or would anyone like to come along with me if I do choose to go? Any help would be appreciated. Would be nice to have a waking companion.

I wish I could remember the author, but there was a book written by a guy who did just that. Why not camp your way across? It would be cheaper than a motel and you could carry a tarp and sleeping bag on a backpack. You might want to invest in a gps. It will help you route yourself, or buy maps. Or since you are still online, go to Map quest and print out some routes.

I would walk the south in the winter and go north in the summer. I do remember this guy wore out a few pairs of hiking boots in his trek. And he worked out to get in shape for it.

Have you considered going public and walking across America in the name of your favorite charity or cause? You just might get people to sponsor you and give you money for expenses. And if you get good enough publicity you might get free motel rooms, meals, and gear.

Just a thought. Careful planning for this just might make your plan more viable. This other guy also took his dog with him by the way. Sometime during the trip the dog was killed though if I recall.

The author another poster was trying to think of was Peter Jenkins, who walked across America and wrote two books about his journey.

I know this letter is years old but i am planning a walk across the USA very soon. Contact me if you are interrested. I too am broke, no job, and at the very bottom of the bucket. I have read many articles and books covering this adventure and have hiked and camped for many years. I also have learned that a walk for charity is the best way to aquire a lil living money along the way and an excellent reason for walking in the first place. A website created for this adventure is an excellent way for those willing to donate to keep track of your adventure and show that their money is being added to the charity total.

If you have already taken this hike please contact me to share your information.

Thanks in advance,
Shannon
